Our physical therapists work closely with the patient to maximize his/her potential following an upper or lower extremity amputation. The patient is provided with therapy to stretch, strengthen, shape and toughen up the skin/soft tissue of the amputated extremity. The therapist will educate you for how to use the custom fit prosthetic limb and help you return to previous functional level.

The patients with upper extremity amputation are educated over:

  • Use of prosthesis for arm and hand function;
  • Skin, scar & stump management, and
  • Routine care of the prosthesis.

The issues addressed for patients with lower extremity amputation are:

  • Sitting and standing balance with and without the lower extremity prosthesis;
  • Gait training - learning to walk with a lower extremity prosthesis
  • Skin, scar & stump management, and
  • Routine care of the prosthesis.

At HealthRite we offer several different types of gait training in the parallel bars, on the stairs, ramps, with a combination of endurance exercises, strength, balance and plyometric activities.

Gait Training
Gait training is mainly provided in order to re-teach patient safe and efficient methods of walking. A gait training program can help adults and children following an injury or debilitating conditions. This prepares patients to function at home and out in public without the risk of falling or without using an assistance device.

An evaluation will be performed by the physical therapist and a gait analysis will be performed to determine deficiencies and current abilities. Our physical therapist will determine the most efficient exercises to improve strength and balance, to help measure progress and walk without the use of assistance devices. However, progress during gait training can be limited due to muscle weakness, pain, loss of sensation and the presence of excessive involuntary muscular contractions.

Gait training may be provided for those with lower extremity injuries or those who have spent an extended period of time in bed and significant muscle weakness.

Common Conditions for the use of Gait Training are:

  • Amputation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Brain or Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Post-operation
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Sports Injuries
